Can I skip my period on my birth control?

I realize that the exact day i start my sugar pills is the day i leave for the beach. I am irritable and always miserable and cramping on my period. Though, I take bc. Ortho tri cyclen lo. can I just skip the sugar pills and go straight into the next pack just this one time? Will that make me skip my period? if not, is there any other option? And, if it does skip it, is it safe?
